This piece is a staunchly Māori expression of welcome — a two-dimensional karanga.

The waharoa, or entranceway, is an open invitation. Standing at its threshold is Hinenuitepō, the tekoteko — the kaitiaki who welcomes us into her marae, Te Tatau o te Pō.

The waharoa is adorned with the carving styles of both my and Ahi’s tīpuna. The manaia, woven throughout this space of invitation, represent us. They symbolise the interweaving of wairua that takes place within these wānanga spaces — something Ahi so profoundly facilitates.

The message behind this piece is simple and powerful:
